Efficiency improvements delivered through the BIT NVQ.

Smurfit Kappa SSK is part of the Smurfit Kappa Group, Europe’s leading paper-based packaging manufacturer.

Issues

During discussions with Proskills, Smurfit Kappa SSK identified a need to develop their people with formal qualifications for their future, whilst at the same time improving the Workplace Organisation (5S) safety performance and deliver process improvements to increase O.E.E. within the papermill.  Proskills approached CIF to see if they could support Smurfit Kappa SSK in delivering these requirements.

Support

CIF carried out an initial assessment with key people at Smurfit Kappa SSK to understand their expectations, issues, time frame and resource allocation. This enabled CIF, with the support of Stoke on Trent College, to offer Smurfit Kappa a pilot training package that included a bespoke Business Improvement Techniques (BIT) NVQ, which satisfied the criteria that the business had initially identified, covering 5S, Health and Safety, and Process Improvements, and giving the people a formally recognised qualification.  The aim of the pilot was to check that the BIT NVQ was the right route for to take.

CIF delivered all the underpinning knowledge, supported the team through practical improvements and carried out the assessment for the BIT qualification over a period of six months.
